Tell us about yourself and your family. Where did you grow up/go to school? Meet your husband.
My family origins are rooted in Seoul, Korea, so I grew up spending time in both the U.S. and Korea. I am a graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, where I began my journey in fashion, art and design. It was actually a Parsons colleague who introduced me to my husband, Patrick. Ironically, he attended one of my very first bridal trunk shows where I showcased a few of my first bridal gown designs. We now live in Greenwich with our daughter who is four years old.
What do you do?
I am a fashion designer and business owner with a passion for art and creativity. I specialize in women’s couture and classically chic day wear. Each piece I design and create starts with a vision or inspiration, then a sketch, and eventually – after a wildly fun, creative process of choosing colors, fabrics, textures and fine detailing – becomes the beautiful pieces hanging in Olivine Gabbro, my Greenwich Avenue store. I would describe my Olivine Gabbro collection as timeless, refined and elegant.
Why did you start your business?
I began hand making bespoke custom couture dresses, wedding gowns, and coats for a few clients. Word spread fast and the number of clients and requests kept growing and growing to the point where I could not keep up just by myself. I knew I needed to take the next step and start my business, Olivine Gabbro.
What sets your company apart?
Excellence is what distinguishes Olivine Gabbro; we operate at a level of excellence that is quite rare. We have fantastic relationships with our clients and deliver excellence in the quality of our garments. We also give our clients a chance to be part of the creative design process, should they decide they need a bespoke garment. Clients can come to me with an idea for a dress and we can sit down and sketch out the ideas to create a truly custom, one-of-a-kind, couture piece made to their exact measurements. Bespoke couture is a lost art, but it’s something we offer at Olivine Gabbro that definitely sets us apart. Furthermore, much of our collection is hand crafted right here in our store with THE finest quality fabrics and textiles. Fine craftsmanship is hard to come by, but easy to detect when you know and recognize quality. Our clients know that our caliber of quality and care is at a level that they can find nowhere else.
Which Samsung Galaxy phone do you have? Does anyone else in your family or work have one?
I own the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. My entire family owns Samsung phones. We love them!
What are your favorite features of your Samsung Galaxy phone?
I love the S Pen feature and the wide screen size! I also adore the action memo and video/photo features.
What role does your Samsung Galaxy phone play at work?
The ability to sketch a design on my phone allows me to take my business anywhere and everywhere. If I get inspired in the middle of a restaurant or train ride, I can take out my phone and start designing. The phone also makes it easy for me to show many of my collections and designs at appointments as a slide show.
What are your top 3 favorite apps?
Instagram; WhatsApp for messaging with any mobile platform; and SoundCloud for creating, sharing, and promoting original music.
If you could design an app for the future, what would you make?
A Shazam-like app but for clothing… if I could photograph a pair of shoes I see someone wearing and tap a button and have it tell me the brand and where to buy it, that would be GREAT!!
What do you think is the best invention (so far) in your lifetime?
